Based
on the research conducted so far, there is little evidence
of price increases as a result of new lead (Pb)-free termination
finishes. However, producers may experience additional costs
with regard to other materials, for example replacement solder
alloys, or in plant refurbishment or upgrades. In addition,
there may be less obvious costs associated with RoHS compliance
in terms of obsolescence management, additional handling procedures
and staff training.
There is a very real likelihood of unprecedented levels of
obsolescence as we approach 2006. CASEC™
Toolkit data has revealed a combination of formal obsolescence
notices together with less obvious non-conversion strategies.
If the components you use do not appear on a manufacturers
conversion roadmap, the future availability of such product
must be questioned.
It is worth remembering that a component which does not comply
with RoHS is, to all intents and purposes, obsolete if you
are unable to use it after the enforcement date.
